Misogynism in Powder Keg

For examples, please see the Mysogynism Examples page

Although department briefs sometimes contained mysoginistic angles, misogynism most often appeared in the jokes section of the paper. In this section, women were almost exclusively portrayed as either sexual objects to be conquered or as annoyances to be brushed aside. When mysoginistic tones would pop up in the news section, they appeared as one-dimensional portrayals of women based solely on their physical appearances. Likewise, beauty contests held at the Depot opened up women to public scrutiny and created a public discourse about the attractiveness of women on the base, a discourse that would spill over into the paper weeks before and after the contest. By objectifying women, men were able to remove women from their "threatening" roles as coworkers and reassert their identities as the fairer sex.
